The weather is great and you’re ready to soak up the sun and enjoy the summer nights with your friends. The problem? You’ve neglected your outdoor living space the whole winter and not it’s in desperate need for a little TLC.
New mulch and flowers have sucked up most of your budget, but you’re still in need of something more. So let’s talk about the 5 best ways to upgrade your outdoor living space on a budget.

1. Seating
Of course, the first thing on the list is seating. Seating is what makes your backyard a place where you can sit, enjoy, and relax. Seating can get pricey so keep your eyes peeled for a good idea. My favorites are Target, Wayfair, and Home Goods when it comes to finding outdoor furniture for more reasonable prices.
There are also a million DIY options, from hanging porch swings to DIY outdoor sofas. DIY is the way to go if you’re looking for quality on a budget. Nothing beats solid wood!
2. Privacy
Privacy is something we all want, but aren’t all fortunate to have. Even if you love your neighbors, it’s nice to have at least a section of your outdoor living space that feels private.
There are so many DIY options here, and we even have a DIY privacy wall tutorial too! You can add plants to your privacy wall to add some life into it or simply pick a design that you enjoy.
Curtains are a great way to add privacy if you are trying to keep the DIYing to a minimum. Even sheer curtains can make a difference. No one is going to say hi to you through a curtain ?
3. Fire
Adding a fire adds something fun to your outdoor space. Who doesn’t love sitting by a fire? Or seeing something lit up bright in the night? It adds extra light and a place for people to gather and just hang out.
Even if you have a tiny outdoor space (we do), you can still incorporate a fire element. If you’re really tight on space, tiki torches are a great solution. Added bonus? They keep the mosquitoes away!
If you have a little bit more space or are already planning on adding a table, a fire pit table is a great option. It has a place to hold your drinks and all those s’mores! Fire pit tables can get pretty pricey, but we have a small DIY fire pit table that you can build for $120
4. Lighting
Now I’m not talking about floodlight lighting. I’m talking about fun lighting that adds a sense of coziness and style. You can’t go wrong with market lights or lanterns. Am I the only person who thinks a place is 1000x cooler just because it has market lights?
5. Games
It’s time to get FUN! No backyard party, or BBQ, is complete without a couple of fun games to play. My personal favorite is Kan Jam, but there are so many DIY options as well: cornhole, giant tic tac toe, jenga, or even bowling!
So if you’re on a budget and need to quickly spruce up your outdoor space, pick one (or all) of the following: seating, privacy wall, fire element, lighting, and backyard games. What other things do you consider a must-have in your outdoor living space?
